Local talents paid cheap by fellow Dabawenyos
A community of graphic artists in Davao has criticized the unfair treatment suffered by Davao artists, especially in getting compensation for their work and services..
Davao Graphic Designers Community (DGDC) co-founder Paolo Ramirez on Wednesday said that there has been a disparity of rates for local graphic artists compared to their counterparts in the nation’s capital.
Ramirez, a freelance graphic designer, charged that there is a huge gap between rates paid to Davao-based designers and those coming from Manila.
“We want to have standardized fees for graphic artists,” Ramirez said, because whether it’s coming from Davao or from Metro Manila, we’re doing the same quality output.”
This was also raised by Davao-based video creator Phillip Te Hernandez on his Facebook account.
He said the unfair treatment being suffered by Davao artists is partly the fault of fellow Dabawenyos.
He said that he is saddened that some Davao business owners pay huge amounts for Cebu and Manila talents, while usually paying the Davao-based talents very much less.
Hernandez, a viral social media influencer of “Davao Conyo”, said that Davao talents should be given a break treatment, considering that they are doing quality service.
“Davao talents out there should know their worth. As long as you allow cheapskates decide the price tag on them, they will always see local artists as someone they could pay so little in exchange for hard work.”
DGDC will be organizing DesignSouth Creative Conference, an event that aims to provide venues for local artists to be recognized, network with other creatives, and improve their craft.
The whole-day event, slated on December 1 at the Malayan Colleges Mindanao in Matina, will be featuring six top creatives from Mindanao and the Philippines.
The speakers will be Aurthur Mercader (3D Animation), Alfven Ato (Concept Art), Nikko Bryle Tan (Animation), Pwek Kwong (Identity Design), Lei Melendres (Doodle Art Illustration) and John Amor (Comic Art and Illustration).
DesignSouth will also exhibit featuring 40 artworks from designers around Mindanao in one venue.
Ramirez said that through this event, local artists will be given a bigger opportunity in the creatives industry.
“DGDC’s aim is to showcase the best of our local talents,” He added, “Through this; we want to partner with different communities, and to seek support from the Davao City government.”
DGDC, a non-profit organization, had been actively supporting the field of graphic design and art in General in the city.
