The Cooperative Development Authority announced that Region XI ranks fourth in terms of total registered cooperatives nationwide.
CDA Regional Director Elma Oguis said that out of the 2,042 registered cooperates in the country, 9% comes from the Davao Region. Davao City hosts 37.5% of the entities in the region with 726 registered cooperatives.
The data was underscored on Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at the City Hall of Davao, days after the Co-op Month Celebration culminated on October 27, Saturday at the Mergrande Resort.
In a submitted cooperative report to CDA nationwide, 7% are composed of large-scale cooperatives, 21% are medium-scale cooperatives, 33% are small-scale cooperatives and 39% are micro-cooperatives.
Oguis also said that Davao Region has hit an P8 billion mark in total assets. Some of the cooperatives mentioned that are part of the elite billionaires’ club are Sta. Ana Multipurpose Cooperative (SAMULCO), Agdao Multi-Purpose Cooperative, King Multipurpose Cooperatives.
CDA is also pushing for the “KoopKapatid” program or big brother helping small brother cooperative partnership to level up and boost the cooperative movement.
The “KoopKapatid” scheme is a collaborative effort of CDA with agencies that have programs focused on coops such as the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to strengthen micro-coops graduate into small coop category.
“This will be composed of large and micro coops who has the expertise, and who has already survived in the management, wherein they can be of help to the small cooperatives,” Oguis said.
