DAVAO CITY – Members of the academe have expressed their disapproval of the recent action of the Supreme Court (SC) to lift the 2015 Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) over Commission on Higher Education’s memorandum circular excluding Filipino and Panitikan subjects on tertiary subjects.
In a statement issued by the Departamento ng Filipino at Ibang mga Wika of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), they believed that there is a need to retain these subjects in times of globalization and neo-colonialism.
Written in Filipino, the academe said, “We believe that there is a need to expand the teachings of Filipino language and literature in College. Especially in times of division and disunity, these would play a huge role in shaping the country.”

On Saturday, SC upheld its decision over CHED’s Memorandum Order No. 20, which excludes Filipino and Panitikan as core courses in colleges.
The TRO was issued back in April 21, 2015, which unanimously decided by the en banc on October 9.
The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) will be conducting a public consultation regarding the said decision.
Among the highlights of the discussion are the implications and effects of SC’s decision.
Stakeholders coming from the academe and other experts in the field of literature are expected to attend in this consultation meeting.
