Davao de Oro, formerly Compostela Valley, will officially be launched during the province’s major festival.
Compostela Gov. Jayvee Uy said that the launching of the new provincial name will be formally introduced during the Bulawan Festival, on March 3-8. The festival will also coincide with the 21st founding anniversary of Compostela Valley province on March 8.
Uy said that he is still overwhelmed with the recent passage of the Davao de Oro Bill, sponsored by representatives Pedro Acharon, Jr., Maria Carmen Zamora and Ruwel Peter Gonzaga, and senators Juan Miguel Zubiri and Sonny Angara.
The Senate Bill 1746 was passed on Monday night and is awaiting the signature of President Duterte for it to become law.
The governor urged his constituents to vote in favor for the changing of the provincial name in next year’s plebiscite.
“The plebiscite will be conducted next year after the 2019 midterm elections,” Uy said during the Diwanag festival on December 7.
He said that the date for the plebiscite has yet to be finalized.
Uy said that the provincial government will exert all efforts in the upcoming plebiscite.
“The change of name is primarily motivated by our desire to be associated with the Davao Region,” Uy’s previous press statement.
Apart from ComVal being the only province in Davao region with no “Davao” in its name, this caused confusion as to where ComVal is located.
“Others would associate us with Cagayan Valley in Luzon or Compostela town in Cebu. If ever Davao de Oro will be fully realized, we expect improved name recognition paving way for influx of investments,” Uy said.
