Polls in Davao peaceful and orderly: PNP, AFP

The local Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) declared the midterm elections in Davao Region especially in Davao City as peaceful and orderly.

“Yung general assessment sa ating ongoing elections is generally peaceful and orderly,” Police Regional Office (PRO) 11 regional director Police BGgen Marcelo Morales said.

Morales said they haven’t received any major incident reports but encountered minor downtime in some vote counting machines (VCM) in the entire Davao Region.

“110 out of the 3,771 VCM yung nag malfunction pero mabilis na-address ng technicians and service provider o kaya nag shi-shift sila sa manual voting para di maantala yung pag boboto,” the regional director said, adding that selected voting centers used their spare VCMs.

Comelec spokesperson lawyer Krisna Samantha Caballero announced that they provided contingency VCMs in every voting centers.

Morales, however, elaborated that they accosted two persons involved in a vote buying incident in Bansalan, Davao del Sur yesterday.

“Nakatanggap tayo ng validated reports on alleged vote buying and out of the 8 reported vote buying, dalawa lang ang na validate doon at nahuli na yung dalawang tao and they will be charged through the Omnibus election code,” he added.

The security agency also accosted 67 violators of the 48-hour election liquor ban which officially commenced on Sunday, May 12.

Aside from the election-related killing incident that involves the brother of an incumbent mayor in New Corella, Davao del Norte weeks ago, Morales said there were no election-related killing incidents occurred right after that.

Morales shared that more than 8,100 personnel region-wide were deployed including augmentations from the AFP and Local Government Unit (LGU)s.  

The Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom), meanwhile, also monitored its area of responsibility and declared Eastern Mindanao yesterday as generally peaceful as well.

Eastmincom spokesperson lieutenant colonel Ezra Balagtey told Edge Davao yesterday that as of 1:00pm consolidate update from election monitoring action centers both from the PNP and AFP in Eastern Mindanao, the election in Eastern Mindanao is “generally peaceful.” 

Some technical glitches referring to the VCMs did not affect the security of the election neither created commotion or public disorder.

Balagtey said supervising the joint AFP-PNP Eastern Mindanao area election monitoring centers are Eastmincom commander Lt. Gen. Felimon T. Santos Jr., Directorate for Integrated Police Operation-Eastern Mindanao (DIPO-EM) director Police MGen Alfredo C. Valdez, and Eastmincom chairman BGen Ernesto Torres Jr.
