For the past 8 weeks, Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte took over the reins as acting chief executive of the city. He has, by far, passed the test with flying colors.
The neophyte official described mayorship, even in acting capacity, as complicated but fulfilling to address the problems and witnessing firsthand the milestones of the city.
“Labad sa ulo, pero ani man gyud trabaho nato, i-address mga concerns sa city,” Duterte said during last Thursday’s Sanguniang Panglungsod media forum held at the SP Lounge.
The younger brother of City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who took a two-month leave, took the helm as the acting mayor of Davao City last July 19.
VM Baste was immediately put to test during the Kadayawan Festival last August and represented her older sister in various Davao City-related events.
He was seen around the city monitoring various agencies especially the security sector which is the primary focus and the trademark of his family.
Duterte also personally responded in the recent flash flood in Bangkal where he realized the improtance of the preemptive evacuation to ensure the safety of every affected households.
When asked if he will again take the responsibility of heading the city, Duterte joked to ask her sister a one month leave before accepting the responsibility.
“Manghangyo sa ko sa iyaha na ipa-leave sa ko niyag isa ka bulan bagonko musugot. Di bitaw, if kailangan gyud, I will always accept it kay mao man ni sulod ta diri para serbisyohan atoang katawhan,” he said.
The younger Duterte said it pays that he is already used to government operations, growing up in a political-oriented family.
