The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday announced that it will hold a voter registration for indigenous peoples (IP) next week.
In a statement, the Comelec said the event, called the “IP Registration Week”, will be held on September 16 to 20, 2019.
“The project aims to intensify registration efforts within the different IP communities all over the country; to highlight the importance of IP voters as members of the electorate; and to increase awareness on the electoral issues and concerns of IP communities,” it said.
The Comelec noted that at least one satellite registration will be held for IPs in provinces with identified IP population within the period mentioned.
The Comelec’s provincial and regional offices are finalizing the areas where satellite registrations would be held.
Meanwhile, the Comelec said those who are interested to participate in or conduct a satellite registration for the benefit of IP voters and/or IP Communities in their area may directly coordinate with the Office of the Election Officer (OEO) in their city/municipality or the Office of the Provincial Election Supervisor (OPES) in their province.
The poll body said the nationwide event will be held in anticipation of the upcoming National IP Month in October.
The two-month voter registration period for regular and youth voters is ongoing nationwide in connection with the May 2020 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
The registration period started last August 1 and will end on September 30. (PNA)
