The world’s biggest book sale Big Bad Wolf (BBW) returns to Davao on November 22 to December 2 with better and wider selection of books in multiple genres including fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and premium titles.
Slated to open 24 hours a day to Davaoenos for 11 days at the Enderun Tent, Azuela Cove, BBW will bring one million books and offer 50 percent to 90 percent off recommended retail price for book lovers.
“Last year we saw 34 percent are fiction which is the highest compared to non-fiction and children. This is quiet surprising and it really shows how much the people in Davao love fiction,” said Jacqueline Ng,founder and executive director of BBW in an interview.
Ng said based on their experience in Davao City last year, they will try to bring one third of each category fiction, non-fiction, and children.
“In certain markets sometimes we bring 40 percent to 50 percent children or 40 percent on fiction it just because of the wide range of categories and titles. The venue is not so very big so it would take time to display and present everyhting. Normally customers when they come they will to come back again,” she said.
The book sale allows visitors to enjoy browsing through the wide selection of fiction titles that includes literature, thriller, romance, and young adults. The activity will also bring in numerous genres such as music, self-help, architecture, biographies, and many more to cater every Davaoeño’s needs and them to pick up new books.
The BBW book sale will be bringing once again the Magical books with Augmented Reality (AR) technology to the book sale. These books aim to assist in a child’s learning and development as they are able to interact, read, play, and learn using its cutting-edge technology to revolutionize reading for young ones including book classics as “Little Red Riding Hood” and eight new titles such as “ABC Fun with Mickey” and “123 Counting Fun With Mickey”.
“Last year one of the series that we have featured was our AR magic books from a US publisher in direct animation. This was well-received throughout our market including Philippines. This year we have brought 14 titles including Christmas,” Ng said.
The children’s books, which includes activity books, pop up books, picture books, coloring books and audio books are expected to leave parents spoilt for choice and encourages their children to create a love for reading.
Ng said the BBW sale travels globally and has explored four cities in the Philippines including Manila, Davao, Cebu and Pampanga.
She said with last year’s turnout in Davao City, they are expecting to see more Davaoeños at the BBW book sale this year.
“Normally for the first year we dont know what to expect but so far because Davao CIty was our venue in the Philippines last year and we have our experience in MAnila and Cebu so roughly we know what the Filipinos like to read and in Davao we actually better prepared. But again every market is different and every region is different. This year we used our history from last year to create a better selection for this year,” Ng said.
Ng said their decision to go outside Manila is not so much of how much they are going to sell but it is how much the people needed them.
“The petition online from Cebu and Davao was so strong that we dont even know what is the result in Manila we already committed to Cebu and we also committed to Davao,” she said.
The BBW book sale also partnered with Gawad Kalinga (GK) as part of its advocacy through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm named the Red Readerhood (RRH) that enables readers to give the best to the least.
In last year’s BBW book sale in Davao, 2,111 books were donated to various villages, home and elementary schools in Patag, Misuhumey Pegalongan, and Dumalogdog. This year, the collected books will be distributed to Sibol Villarica, Sibol Cogon, Sibol San Nicolas, Sibol Mahayag, and Sibol Medsa in hopes in spreading knowledge to children.
Also this year, the initiative has continued on by collecting 13,679 books in Manila, Pampanga, and Cebu.
Now on its 10th year, the BBW book sale aims to encourage reading by providing high-quality, brand new English books at low prices by visiting more cities in countries such as Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, South Korea, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Thailand.
