Violations to quarantine protocols and health standards emerged as the highest number of cases filed in the Davao City Prosecutor’s Office amidst Covid-19 pandemic.
Davao City Prosecutor Nestor Ledesma said that at onset of the pandemic from April, May, and June, violations of Republic Act 11332 or mandatory reporting of notifiable diseases and resistance and disobedience to person in authority topped the most number of cases filed.
“Pirti gyud daghana, in fact, I would say that our office is now swamped almost overwhelmed by these Covid-related cases in relation to violation to quarantine protocols, and health standards issued by the Department of Health and other government agencies,” Ledesma said in a virtual presser on Thursday.
Coming in next to the quarantine-related cases were cases related to Dangerous Drugs Law, estafa and bouncing checks law, and illegal gambling.
“Daghan illegal gambling karong pandemic period,” he said.
This is compared to pre-Covid, from January to March, wherein top in the number of cases filed was the violation of Republic Act 9165 or Dangerous Drugs Law, followed by estafa and the violation of bouncing checks law, then theft and robbery, and illegal gambling respectively.
In terms of the total of cases filed, Ledesma said in the first half of 2020, the number of cases filed in the prosecutor’s office was reduced with a total of 5,484 cases compared to the 11,100 cases filed in 2019 and 9,400 cases filed in 2018.
