Additional 100 heads of live hogs arrived in the Mati City Slaughterhouse on July 1, 2022 as part of the ongoing effort of the City of Mati LGU to bring down the price of pork meat in the market.
City Veterinarian Office head Dr. Marites Linsag-Erispe said the supply came from a farm in Davao del Sur who happens to be friends of the Rabat family. She said Mati City was prioritized to be supplied despite the huge demand from Metro Manila.
Erispe said the city has already bought a total of 1,044 live hogs from the Davao supplier since February this year as part of the food security program initiated by then city councilor Eric Rabat.
Erispe said the price of pork in the market remains at P330 to P350 per kilo of prime cuts because of the “importing” of hogs by the city.
Erispe explained that due to the effects of the African Swine Fever, the demand for pork has affected not just Mati City but all other areas in the country.
Erispe said they will continue “importing” live hogs for now until such time that the City of Mati would be efficient enough to produce pork needed by Matinians.
From the supplier, the live hogs are delivered directly to the Mati Slaughterhouse managed by Virgilio Dacillo Jr.
From food security, the administration of Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat is now aiming food sufficiency in light of the food shortage affecting many countries in the world.
