In pursuit of empowering communities through Science and Technology (S&T), the Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI) trained 45 women in Barangay Pañalum and Barangay Mapula, Paquibato District in Davao City on soap making.
DOST XI Technology and Consultancy Unit personnel Robelyn Pulido spearheaded the conduct of the activity where participants acquired knowledge on how to make herbal soap, liquid dishwashing detergent and powder detergent.
Hon. Analou Trespeses, Barangay Captain of Pañalum, thanked the DOST XI for initiating the training to the women of the said barangays as this will be an additional livelihood for them.
“These women have a dedicated budget for their own organizations, and this training gave them an idea on where they could possibly invest it,” she added.
Evangeline Ecleo, President of Mapula Women’s Association, also expressed her gratitude to the DOST XI for imparting knowledge and skills in soap making.
“I hope that there will be more training like this in order to multiply the source of income of the women here in our barangay,” she added.
This training is under the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program which aims to empower the most economically challenged communities and improve the quality of life through S&T.
The package of S&T interventions is focused on five (5) entry points, namely: health and nutrition; human resource development; environmental protection and conservation; disaster risk reduction and management; climate change adaptation; and economic development.
This project aims to capacitate residents and organizations from the target barangays by providing them with capacity-building training such as technology training in soap making. (PR/DOST)
