Ortiz reiterates to DILG: Davao City is not part of Davao del Sur

Councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz, chairperson of the Committee on Finance, Ways, and Means, and Appropriation of the City Council on Tuesday bared that a request is being reiterated to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) of detaching Davao City as part of Davao del Sur.

“The Philippine Councilor’s League (PCL) passed a resolution to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) specifying that Davao City is a chartered city. Dugay na nato na problema and again we reiterate the same request na kung puwede mausab na nila,” Ortiz said during the Aprubado sa Konseho media briefing on Tuesday.

Davao was inaugurated as a charter city on October 16, 1936, by President Manuel L. Quezon and came into effect on March 1, 1937.

Davao City as a charter city was also approved by the Supreme Court of the Philippines through Republic Act No.4354, June 19, 1965, or an act to revise the charter city of the city of Davao and for other purposes, which shall be known also as the Revised Charter of the City of Davao.

“Davao City is a chartered city and is not under any province in Mindanao. Dapat na ma-change na nila (DILG). We are looking forward for a positive response kay atoa bitaw ma-mention, although, dugay na namo na ginaingon na Davao City, Davao del Sur but we’re not under the province of Davao del Sur,” Ortiz said.

Davao City will be celebrating its charter city’s 87th founding anniversary next month.

Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, chairperson of the Committee on Tourism and Beautification of the City Council, said the celebration will be highlighted with a total of 25 official events and activities including “Kalingawan sa Distrito,” “Kundiman at Harana sa Araw ng Dabaw,” “Dabawenyo Ako,” and “Araw ng mga Empleyado.”
