Rivers overflow, streets flooded after heavy downpour in Davao City

The heavy rains brought about by the trough of the Low Pressure Area (LPA) has caused rivers to overflow, thousands of families to be evacuated, and flooding of some of the streets and areas in Davao City on Wednesday.

The City Information Office (CIO) reported data gathered by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) of more than 2,000 families or more than 8,000 individuals from 15 barangays were rescued and evacuated on January 31, 2024.

The water levels of the city’s major tributaries namely Lipadas River, Davao River, Matina River, Lasang River, Talomo River, and Bunawan River were at critical level and still being monitored and gradually subsiding morning of Thursday, February 1, 2024.

Streets in Matina Gravahan in Barangay 74-A, Juliville Subdivision and Jade Valley Subdivision in Buhangin were still not passable on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the trough of LPA caused landslide and destructions in some major roads and bridges in Davao Oriental.

The Bitan-agan Bridge in Don Enrique Lopez in City of Mati (road going to Tarragona) was damaged and not passable to all types of vehicle on Thursday.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) declared San Isidro to Governor Generoso Road not passable for all types of vehicles due to a landslide in Barangay La Union, Municipality of San Isidro, Davao Oriental on Wednesday evening.

A segment of the bridge in Sobrecarey, Caraga collapsed due to the force of the river’s heavy torrents at the same time a landslide incident was reported in Sitio Nanayngan, Brgy. San Jose, within the municipality of Caraga.

Floodwaters submerged the roads and establishments along the rotunda in Dahican, water from the nearby river has spilled onto the road in Barangay Calapagan, Lupon, extensive flooding affected motorists in a portion of the road leading to Dahican, highway along Lopez, Matiao, was not passable as the Matiao Creek has overflown.

Based on the data from the Office of the Civil Defense-Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council 11 (OCD-RDMMC 11) as of February 1, 2024, there are seven barangays in Davao de Oro affected by flooding and eight in Davao Oriental.

There are seven barangays in Davao de Oro and five barangays in Davao Oriental were affected by landslide.

There are three roads in Davao de Oro that are not passable due to landslide and three roads in Davao Oriental are not passable due to landslide and flooding.
