Councilor Trisha Ann Villafuerte, chairperson of the committee on Women, Children, and Family Relations of the City Council, said on Tuesday that the common complaint among the cases under violence against women (VAW) is marital problems.
Villafuerte said this is one of the topics during the women’s summit by the Integrated Gender and Development office held in observation of International Women’s Month on Monday.
“Upon discussion usually the cases involved are family, husband and wife quarrel sa pamilya, pero wala gyud na specifiy kung unsa tung mga cases na nahatag pero usually ang nakabutang husband and wife problem,” Villafuerte said during the Aprubado sa Konseho media briefing on Tuesday.
Villafuerte said that based on data, VAW cases declined during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and soared when everything was back to normal.
“During the summit on the cases on violence against women, 2020 during the pandemic medyo niubos ang cases and nibalik na gawas na ang mga tao medyo nitaas na pud ang cases,” she said.
The summit carried the theme: “Kababayen-an Kusganong Ipadayag ang Kakayahan Taliwala sa mga Hulga sa Panahon.”
In her privilege speech on Tuesday, Councilor Pilar Braga urged the women to be vigilant and to be active participants in governance for whatever the government does or does not do as it will affect women and children mostly.
“Celebrating International Women’s Month is not about women asserting superiority over men, but we are here to declare that women have the same rights as men in our humane society. Empowered women are the best partners of men in our quest for a better world,” Braga said.
Braga also cited Davao City’s landmark legislation, the Women’s Development Code, which serves as a “Bible” in the city’s quest for equality, women’s rights, and empowerment.
She added that through collective struggles, programs were established to promote women and gender equality in Davao City include The Magna Carta for Women; Ordinance No. 500 Series of 1997 known as the “Women Development Code of Davao City; Davao City’s Gender Mainstreaming Experience; Gender Equality and Empowerment; Women’s Agenda: Trabaho, Kabuhayan, Kalusugan, Edukasyon, Kalikasan, Kaligtasan, Kabastusan, and Karahasan; and Solo Parents Ordinance.
