The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) – Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) led the destruction of 623 modified mufflers and 42 sets of blinkers held at the TEU headquarters in Ecoland, Davao City on Friday.
This is in line with Presidential Decree 96 (PD 96) or the operation against illegal installation of blinkers.
Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte graced the destruction ceremony of mufflers and blinkers/lights, which were confiscated by authorities from July 2, 2023 to May 30, 2024
“Ang point ani is we are creating a society that is safe for all those people who are out in public. Ang buot pasabot kung naa ta’y modified mufflers, kining tambutso nga ibutang nimo para magsaba saba ka, ang tendency sa usa ka nagdala ug sakyanan or gadala ug motor, iyaha nang bombahan ang gasolina, in order for you para mapatingog nimo na imohang muffler, bombahan nimo, mukusog ang dagan, dinha magsugod ang disgrasya,” the mayor said.
Duterte said the use of muffler is just to brag, causes accidents, and contributes to noise pollution, which has a detrimental effect to the quality of life of Dabawenyos.
Colonel Rolindo Suguilon, officer-in-charge of Davao City Police Office (DCPO), said the activity is an important step forward in their pursuit of road safety and maintenance of peace and order in Davao City.
“The destruction of modified mufflers and others symbolizes our agressive commitment to the enforcement of traffic laws to ensure safe road environment for all Dabawenyos,” Suguilon said.
Land Transportation Office 11 (LTO 11) director Eleonor Calderon declared the re-launching of the implementation of the provisions of Republic Act 10586 operations otherwise known as the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013 within the territory of Davao City.
The relaunch granted authority to 120 personnel of TEU and DCPO to implement RA 10586.
Duterte also turned over an initial of six alcohol breath analyzer kits to TEU.
The mayor said the analyzer kits will provide evidence that a driver is violating Republic Act 10586.
The mayor added that the destruction of the mufflers and the use of the breath analyzer kits aims to strengthen the road safety efforts in Davao City.
