Mindanao power generation facilities supply Visayas with over 400mw

Undersecretary Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevera of the Department of Energy (DOE) disclosed that Mindanao generation facilities have been supplying more than 400 megawatts to the Visayas grid.

“Sa buong Mindanao, two thirds lang ng kanyang supply ang kanyang demand, dami niyang supply. Si Mindanao ang nagsu-supply ng Visayas ng more than 400 megawatts,” Guevarra told media during the 16th Media Seminar in Iloilo City sponsored by the United States Embassy in Manila last week.

MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power) President and CEO Roel Castro stated that Visayas power distributors are using the extra electricity supply from Mindanao to meet the electricity demand.

MORE Power is an electric power distribution company in the Philippines serving Iloilo City since 2019.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has accomplished the successful energization of the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP), which aims at enhancing power stability and reliability throughout the country.

On April 30, 2023, the high-voltage submarine and overhead lines facilitated the initial transfer of 22.5 MW from Mindanao to Visayas during the energization process. NGCP has outlined its plans to gradually increase the MVIP’s transfer capacity, reaching 50 MW by mid-May and 112 MW by the end of the month. Ultimately, the project is expected to operate at its full transfer capacity of 450 MW by the third quarter of this year.
