Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte on Sunday said that they are ready to wage a legal war against the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.
The mayor cited the legal team of the vice president dubbed as the “legal powerhouse” ready to defend her in the impeachment trial.
The vice president’s defense team consists of her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte; father-in-law, Lucas Carpio Jr., Manases Carpio’s father, brother of retired Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales and cousin of retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio; Philip Sigfrid Fortun, founding partner of Fortun, Narvasa, and Salazar law form — the firm that handles Duterte’s petition opposing the impeachment trial; and Sheila Sison, a partner at Fortun, Narvasa, and Salazar law firm.
“I like to believe na kahibalo ni sila sa ilang ginabuhat ug ginasulod. Andam musukol ang sitwasyon nato karon. Kung unsa man na ilang buhaton para ma-impeach ang vice president andam ta nga musukol dinha,” the mayor said during Basta Dabawenyo podcast.
Last week, the vice president filed a Petition for Certiorari and Prohibition before the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the validity and constitutionality of the fourth impeachment complaint against her.
The fourth impeachment complaint against her was approved by the House of Representatives on the last day of its session before recess on February 5 with a total of 215 lawmakers endorsing it.
The vice president’s camp said, “The petition seeks judicial intervention from the High Court to uphold due process and raises serious legal and constitutional concerns.”
The ball is now in the court of the Senate, whose members will convene as an impeachment court that will decide whether or not to remove the vice president from office.
