The city government of Davao has officially kicked off the 88th Araw ng Dabaw during the opening ceremony entitled “Pasiugdang Pagsaulog” at Rizal Park on Saturday highlighting the strength of the Dabawenyos.

The opening was graced by officials of the city government of Davao, diplomatic corps, and the private sector.

The activity featured performances from world class local talents who have won in national and international competitions.

The official song of Araw ng Dabaw was also launched during the opening.

In his message read by acting vice mayor, Councilor Alberto Ungab, Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte emphasized that this Araw ng Dabaw celebration, with the theme, “88 Years Strong: One Davao”, reflects the strength of the Dabawenyos, shaped by unity, resilience, determination, and compassion for the fellow men and women.

“As we officially open the festivities for the 88th Founding Anniversary of our city, we gather not only to celebrate our rich history, but also to honor the people who have shaped Davao into the strong and dynamic city it is today,” the mayor said.

The mayor underscored that the city’s progress would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of every responsible, law-abiding, and peaceloving Dabawenyo from the past 88 years.

“Dabawenyos from all walks of life, who in ways both big and small, have contributed to the growth and success of our city. And so, we thank you, and we salute you all,” he said.

Duterte also urged every Dabawenyo to take part in the various activities in line with the celebration.

“Let us celebrate with pride and enthusiasm while upholding the culture of security and discipline that define us as Dabawenyos. Through our shared vigilance, responsibility, and commitment to peace, let us ensure a safe and meaningful celebration for all, together as one united Dabawenyo community,” he said.

Meanwhile, Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, chairperson of the Committee on Tourism and Beautification of the City Council of Davao, said more than marking another year since the city’s founding, this is a celebration of 88 years of resilience, unity, and progress.

“This month-long festivity serves as a testament to the unwavering Dabawenyo spirit, which unites our community and motivates us to build a stronger, more prosperous Davao, for generations to come,” he said in his message.

Alejandre said that this year’s theme is a powerful reminder that through every challenge, Dabawenyos remain steadfast, resilient, and united as one Davao.

“Like our city’s iconic symbol, the eagle, Dabawenyos are known for rising above challenges and always striving for greater heights. Its soaring flight reflects our boundless potential and the endless possibilities that lie ahead for Davao City,” he said.

Alejandre added that no matter the trials—be it political hurdles, natural calamities, or hardships, Dabawenyos continue to stand ad strong and move forward together.

“Our unity is our greatest strength, and this celebration affirms our ability to recover, rebuild, and thrive as one community,” he said.

Apart from the performances and the presentation of the 20 candidates for the Mutya ng Dabaw 2025, the main attraction of the night is the lighting up of the giant logo of the 88th Araw ng Dabaw installed at the Quezon Park in front of the City Hall.
