Councilor Louie John Bonguyan, chairperson of the Committee on Energy and Water and Housing and Subdivision of the City Council, bared on Tuesday that Davao City is still open for players to supply water in the city due to its fast-paced development.

Bonguyan said that althiough the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project (DCBWSP) is operating efficiently, opening the water supply concession to other players will be good for the future.

Bonguyan added that so far the bulk water supply project has a surplus and hasn’t maximized its 300 million cubic liters of water a day yet.

He said the bulk water supply project is at its 70% to 80% from its committed 300 million cubic liters a day.

“Pero kung muingon ka ug tama na ba na? Sa karon, yes, but still kung magdungag pa ug tubig ang other players, walay problema ug welcome sila sa city sa Davao. Kay paspas kaayo ta ug evelopment and eventually basin dili na pud na ma-cater that is why we are still open for future use. We are still open for other players to supply water, kung naay players or musulod diri yes they are welcome as long as musunod sila sa requirements and approved sila sa national agencies then welcome sila sa city,” Bonguyan said during the Aprubado sa Konseho media forum.

Apo Agua Infrastructura Inc. (Apo Agua), a water subsidiary of Aboitiz InfraCapital (AIC) and Davao City Water District (DCWD), commenced supplying water from the DCBWSP in December last year.

The operations of DCBWSP, which is the largest of its kind in the country at 300 MLD with a 70-kilometer pipeline, address the water needs of over one million Dabawenyos especially the residents in District 2.

“This is the first time that we are utilizing the surface water or Tamugan River because ang Davao City is very dependent on underground water or Dumoy water, and kabalo tang tanan na ang Davao City is a fast-developing city, highly urbanized city ug makita ninyo daghan condominiums, universities, hospitals and schools, so paspas ang development, ug dili na makaya sa atong underground water lang ang mu-supply sa tibuok syudad sa Davao, so we opted into surface water like Tamugan,” Bonguyan said.

Bonguyan added that the water in the Tamugan River is classified as Class A by the Department of Health (DOH).
