The Davao City Police Office (DCPO)-Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) reported a total of 890 road crash incidents in Davao City between January and March this year.
Based on the consolidated report from 19 police stations in Davao City, human error (inattentiveness of the driver at 43%) is the leading cause of vehicular accidents in the city followed by vehicle defects and road defects.
Of the 1,682 total vehicles involved in these accidents, private vehicles accounted for the largest share at 37%, followed by motorcycles at 21%, and trucks and pickups at 9%.
In terms of severity, most of the incidents resulted in damage to property at 81%, while minor physical injuries made up 16%, serious physical injuries 2%, and incidents of homicide 1%.
The DCPO also identified the top five high-risk areas for road crashes in the city: Carlos P. Garcia Highway, Brgy. Toril, McArthur Highway, Ma-a Road, and Buhangin. Additionally, data revealed that the majority of accidents occurred between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., accounting for 14% of the total incidents.
DCPO spokesperson Capt. Hazel Tuazon reminded drivers to always follow the BLOWBAGETS safety protocol before traveling. BLOWBAGETS stands for Battery, Lights, Oil, Water, Brake, Air, Gas, Engine, Tire, and Self.
“Remind lang nato nga iobserve ang BLOWBAGETS mao ni siya ang safety measures nga buhaton sa driver before mubiyahe to ensure that they are in good condition to drive and ilang mga sakyanan kay safe sa kalsada. Iwasan ang paggamit ug cellphone while driving ug irespeto ang balaod trapiko,” Tuazon told Edge Davao.
