Davao educational institution recognized by IB World School

A private educational institution in Davao City, Stockbridge American International School, has been recognized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, marking it as the first and only authorized IB World School in Mindanao to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for Early Years to Grade 6.

IB is the benchmark for global education and is acknowledged worldwide.

Dyan Cortez, director for international programs of SAIS, explained that by gaining approval to provide the IB PYP, Stockbridge becomes part of an esteemed international network of schools recognized for their academic excellence, innovation, and strong dedication to nurturing compassionate, thoughtful, and empowered students.

Cortez added that becoming an IB World School means that students at SAIS can thrive, compete, and lead on a global stage.

Cortez also emphasized that being authorized as an IB World School amplifies Stockbridge’s commitment to providing globally competitive education, from its curriculum and teaching practices to the facilities and learning environment.

“Most importantly, to how we nurture each child — this achievement tells the world that we are delivering education at a truly global standard. It’s a powerful recognition that puts Stockbridge in the big leagues—and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead. This isn’t just a celebration for our school—it’s a celebration for Mindanao. It proves that international education of the highest standard is now accessible right here in our region,” Cortez told Edge Davao.

She underscored that the IB provides a continuum of education for students aged 3 to 19, focused on inquiry, intercultural understanding, and lifelong learning.

“The IB’s mission aligns seamlessly with Stockbridge’s belief that education should empower young people to thrive in a rapidly changing, interconnected world,” Cortez said.

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP): for learners aged 3–12 (Early Years to Grade 6), the PYP emphasizes holistic, student-centered learning that nurtures curiosity, global awareness, and personal growth.

The Middle Years (Grades 7–10): inquiry continues through interdisciplinary learning as students examine real-world issues, challenge assumptions, and develop their perspectives.

The Senior High Nano MBA (Grades 11–12): A leadership and business innovation track where students apply academic learning to real-world enterprise through entrepreneurship, marketing, financial literacy, and global leadership modules.

“We’ve always believed that children in Mindanao deserve the same world-class education available in the most progressive learning communities. Becoming an IB World School fulfills that promise—and shows families in the region that their children can thrive, compete, and lead on a global stage,” Cortez said.

She stressed that the IB framework is internationally respected for its focus on inquiry-based learning, international-mindedness, and holistic development.

“Its graduates are highly sought-after by top universities and are known for their ability to think critically, act ethically, and lead with empathy,” Cortez added.

The occasion also marked Stockbridge’s 10th anniversary since rebranding in 2015.

Cortez said from its humble beginnings as a small preschool in 2002 to its transformation into a forward-thinking international school, Stockbridge has remained committed to its mission of shaping globally minded changemakers guided by its LIONS Core Values: Leadership, Integrity, Openmindedness, Nobility, and Stewardship.
