Agusan del Norte’s lone district Representative Dale Corvera will pursue converting the Northern Mindanao School of Fisheries (NMSF) in Buenavista town into a polytechnic institution.
In a statement on Monday, Corvera said he filed House Bill (HB) No. 1007 last week, calling it a rehash of HB No. 11361. The previous bill was filed and approved on third and final reading on June 4, 2025 during the 19th Congress, but did not become law due to lack of sufficient time.
“The conversion of NMSF into Northern Mindanao Polytechnic Institute (NMPI) will provide the people of Agusan del Norte and the neighboring provinces with much-needed relevant technical and vocational programs,” Corvera said.
Under the new proposed measure, the NMPI will be administered and overseen by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Its Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs will be restructured to better meet the needs of local and international labor markets for technical skills and to align with current international skills standards.
Corvera said NMPI, as a polytechnic, needs to improve its curriculum to offer post-secondary polytechnic skills and advanced TESDA-registered TVET qualifications.
Furthermore, NMPI will offer skills training and trade courses to enhance technical skills, thereby increasing access to employment, livelihoods, and entrepreneurship. (PNA)
