PWD org hopeful City Council to approve proposed ordinance for sector’s benefits

The Davao Citywide Federation of Persons with Disability called on the City Council for the approval of the ordinance to provide benefits and promote the rights of the Persons with Disability (PWDs) in Davao City.

“The truth of the matter ang PWD ay to all other sectors kami lang ang wala pa gyud natagaan ug national government benefits even in the city, ang amoa lang ordinansa lang nga nagprotekta sa amoa relative to our rights, benefits, and privileges,” said Mario Palo, president of the federation during Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao on Monday.

Lawyer Redendo Martinez, Officer IV of the Person With Disability Affairs Office (PDAO)-Davao City, submitted a proposal for the annual financial subsidy for PWDs in the council.

The proposal has already been forwarded to the Sangguniang Panlungsod and reviewed by the City Legal Office.

According to Davao City Social Welfare Development Office (CSWDO) Head Julie Dayaday, as of July 14, Davao City has more than 20,000 PWDs.

Meanwhile, during the flag ceremony on Monday, which was attended by around 20 groups and organizations of PWDs, Dayaday read Davao City’s Proclamation No.1 declaring July 17 to 23, 2025, the 47th National Disability Rights (NDR) week.

The proclamation was signed by acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte. It states that the city government of Davao recognizes the efforts of the national government in promoting the welfare of PWDs.

The proclamation also declared that the city government of Davao is committed to supporting PWDs and leading in implementing programs, projects, and services for their welfare.

Carrying the theme “Innovation for Inclusion: Building Inclusive Communities Together”, NDR Week 2025 recognizes the importance of innovation in breaking barriers and providing PWDs more access to opportunities.

Among the incoming activities for the celebration are the motorcade from Magsaysay Park to Rizal Park on July 17, paragames on July 19, and product display at NCCC Mall Victoria Plaza from July 21 to 23, 2025.
