MinDA, EU strengthen partnership for renewable energy, infrastructure

The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepen cooperation in renewable energy, infrastructure, and inclusive development during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the Mindanao Development Forum (MDF) 2025 on October 1–2, 2025.

MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso A. Magno met with EU Ambassador to the Philippines H.E. Massimo Santoro and discussed ongoing and future initiatives aimed at accelerating Mindanao’s transition toward resilient energy systems and sustainable economic growth.

Magno said the meeting builds on the continuing partnership between MinDA and the EU in promoting peacebuilding, economic inclusion, and access to energy, particularly in conflict-affected and underserved communities across Mindanao.

He also emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration with development partners, stressing that government resources alone are not sufficient to meet the island’s growing energy and infrastructure needs.

“We see the EU as a vital partner in developing scalable and community-based energy systems that not only power homes and industries but also strengthen local economies and governance,” Magno said.

He added that infrastructure investments must be complemented by sustainability mechanisms and capacity-building initiatives to ensure long-term, inclusive benefits for Mindanaoan communities.

Meanwhile, reaffirmed the EU’s support for Mindanao’s development priorities, emphasizing the need to improve access to clean energy, digital and physical connectivity, and economic opportunities in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

“We commend MinDA’s efforts to coordinate stakeholders and align local priorities with regional and national goals,” Santoro said.

Magno said MinDA and the EU agreed to expand their collaboration on renewable energy and sustainable development programs throughout Mindanao.

“Both parties also committed to strengthening coordination among relevant agencies to align ongoing initiatives with regional development plans, improve communication, and showcase successful joint undertakings,” he said.

Magno underscored that the partnership reflects President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s push for regional convergence and inclusive growth, recognizing Mindanao’s crucial role in advancing national competitiveness and resilience.
