Tagum City, Davao de Oro declared under state of calamity after Oct. 10 quakes

The City of Tagum in Davao del Norte and the Province of Davao de Oro have been placed under a state of calamity following the severe damage caused by the twin earthquakes that struck Davao Oriental on October 10, 2025.

In Tagum, the declaration was made through Resolution No. 245, Series of 2025, after assessments from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) revealed extensive damage to homes, public infrastructure, and utilities.

Based on the Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) as of October 18, a total of 4,511 families or 14,962 individuals were directly affected. The city recorded 404 damaged houses—27 totally destroyed and 377 partially damaged—with an estimated cost of P3.99 million.

Meanwhile, 208 public infrastructures, including bridges, barangay roads, government buildings, classrooms, health facilities, and churches, sustained an estimated P14.04 million in damages.

At least 64 individuals were injured, and several areas experienced power, water, and communication outages, disrupting business operations, public services, and education.

Classes and work were suspended as a safety precaution due to structural damage and public anxiety following the strong tremors.

The resolution aims to expedite rehabilitation and recovery efforts of the Tagum City Government to ensure public safety and restore essential services.

Similarly, the Province of Davao de Oro was declared under a state of calamity through Resolution No. 0289-2025, following a recommendation from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).

In his letter to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, Davao de Oro Governor Raul G. Mabanglo requested a special session to address the impacts of the Magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 earthquakes, both traced to an offshore epicenter near Manay, Davao Oriental.

The quakes were strongly felt in Davao de Oro and neighboring provinces, causing widespread shaking, infrastructure damage, and temporary disruption of utilities.

Based on the resolutions, the state of calamity declaration allows both Tagum City and Davao de Oro Province to utilize calamity funds, control prices of basic goods, and facilitate immediate assistance and rehabilitation programs for affected residents.

Officials said the order will remain in effect until lifted, once recovery and restoration efforts are significantly achieved.

Local governments assured residents of continued assistance, emphasizing coordinated efforts between LGUs, national agencies, and humanitarian partners to help communities recover safely and swiftly.
