Councilor J. Melchor Quitain Jr., chair of the Committee on City-owned Real Properties of the City Council of Davao, told Edge Davao that his committee will convene barangay officials this November to discuss the proposed renaming of barangays.
Quitain said that the meeting also aims to orient the barangay officials on the guidelines for selecting names with historical and cultural relevance.
Quitain said the meeting will be held in coordination with the Davao City Culture and Arts Office under Oca Casaysay.
“The purpose of this meeting is to guide the barangays on how to choose appropriate names that reflect our city’s heritage and identity,” Quitain said.
He added that the initiative forms part of Davao City’s continuing efforts to strengthen local identity and preserve its rich cultural history.
In September this year, Quitain initiated talks on renaming the city’s 40 numbered barangays—mostly located in the first district—to make them easier to recognize.
He said he had already consulted barangay officials, who were open to the renaming but requested additional time to discuss the matter with their respective assemblies before submitting their recommendations to the Davao City Council this month.
According to Quitain, the proposal arose from frequent issues with deliveries and official correspondence due to barangays being identified only by numbers from one to 40.
