Tagum business group expects better electricity service with Davao Light entry

The Tagum City Chamber of Commerce welcomed the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) issuance of a provisional Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) to Davao Light and Power Co., describing the move as a significant step toward improved power service and more competitive electricity rates for consumers in Tagum City and the rest of Davao del Norte.

In an en banc meeting held on December 12, 2025, the ERC granted provisional authority allowing Davao Light to begin connecting customers and collecting payments in areas covered under Republic Act 12144, which expanded the utility’s franchise to include parts of Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro.

The approval remains subject to final confirmation by the regulator.

Under the provisional CPCN, Davao Light is authorized to accept applications for service connections, issue electricity bills, and eventually collect payments, all under the regulatory oversight of the ERC.

In a statement, the Tagum Chamber remains hopeful that concerns raised by Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (NORDECO), which has sought legal remedies to halt the transition, can be addressed through dialogue and a peaceful, orderly negotiation process.

Business leaders stressed that a smooth transition would benefit both consumers and enterprises, citing the need for reliable power supply and affordable electricity to sustain economic growth in Tagum City and across Davao del Norte.

“We all deserve lower rates and better service to support business, improve lives, and build a better economy for Tagum City and Davao del Norte,” the chamber said.

Meanwhile, DLPC President and Chief Operating Officer Enriczar Tia said the approval allows the company to move forward with customer connections following months of groundwork in its expanded service areas.

“For months, Davao Light has laid the foundation of our network in our expanded areas. With this decision, we can now accept applications for connections,” Tia said.

Tia said customers who wish to transfer their electricity service to Davao Light may submit applications online, with links available on the company’s official website, Facebook page, and other communication channels.
