VP Sara hits renewed impeachment talks

Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday criticized renewed discussions in the House of Representatives about a possible new impeachmùent complaint against her, calling the move “not surprising” and claiming its timing follows a “familiar pattern.”

Bayan chairperson Teddy Casiño recently announced that various progressive and civil society groups are reported to be preparing a new impeachment complaint against the vice president by February 2026.

Senate Deputy Majority Leader Risa Hontiveros said on November 26, that she is still hoping the Supreme Court will reverse its decision regarding Duterte’s impeachment.

In a statement, Duterte said past disclosures by Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Navotas Rep. Tobias “Toby” Tiangco, and several House members showed that as early as February 2024, lawmakers were being asked to sign an impeachment complaint against her in exchange for budget allocations.

She said these accounts indicate that the previous complaint was “never driven by principle but by price.”

Despite these claims, Duterte said no investigation was initiated to determine accountability for “billions of pesos” allegedly diverted to political maneuvering instead of public service.

The vice president also questioned why talk of impeachment is resurfacing just as the 2026 national budget is being finalized, accusing some lawmakers of using the constitutional mechanism as a bargaining tool.

“To those who continue to exploit the impeachment process, stop hiding behind the language of ‘good governance,’” Duterte said.

Duterte maintained she is prepared to answer any allegation “grounded in fact and truth.”

However, she asserted she will not stay silent while the process is “twisted into a budget-driven racket.”

“Filipinos deserve better,” she said.
