Fire district urges tighter fire safety measures

In observance of the Fire Prevention Month, the Davao City Fire District (DCFD) reminded Dabwenyos that fire safety must be practiced every day, not only during March.

This, as it rolls out a series of activities designed to strengthen awareness and responsibility across communities.

Fire Senior Insp. Frances Marie S. Sendrijas, DCFD Public Information Unit chief, urged citizens to protect vulnerable sectors such as persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, and children by ensuring they are never left unattended at home.

“Let us be responsible citizen and again we would like to remind the public, yung ating mga vulnerable sector like PWDs, senior citizen and mga bata. As much as possible, wag natin silang iwanan sa mga bahay (Let us be responsible citizens and again we would like to remind the public, our vulnerable sectors like PWDs, senior citizens, and children, as much as possible, do not leave them at home),” she told Madayaw Davao over Davao City Disaster Radio on February 26, 2026.

The launching ceremony of the Fire Prevention Month will begin with a Fire Prevention Run at the Davao Global Township on March 1 at 3 a.m., where participants are also encouraged to bring pre-loved toys for donation to the House of Hope.

The celebration continues with a blood donation campaign on March 5, 2026 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, in partnership with the Philippine National Red Cross Davao City Chapter, at the DCFD Central Parking Bay.

On March 3 to 4, 2026, a Fire Square Roadshow will be held at SM Davao Annex Activity Area followed by the Fire Olympics at Lyceum of the Philippines University on March 14 and March 15, 2026.

She added that electrical fires remain to be the most common, frequently started by overloaded or substandard decorations. Kitchen fires, open flames from candles, and residential fires caused by unplugged appliances come next.

DCFD also continues to strengthen its program ‘Oplan Ligtas sa Pamayanan’ where its personnel visit barangays and educate residents on fire preventive measures.

Sendrijas underscored that these initiatives are designed not only to raise awareness but also to empower Dabawenyos to take proactive steps in preventing fires ensuring that fire safety becomes a daily habit.

“Hindi lang tayo dapat sa March nagiging aware sa fire safety but, we should always practice it every day (We shouldn’t only be aware of fire safety in March, but we should always practice it every day),” she added. CIO
