City gov’t of Davao adopts ‘flexible Fridays’ to drive energy conservation efforts

The city government of Davao has announced on Wednesday the implementation of a flexible work arrangement for its employees every Friday, effective April 17, 2026.

According to an advisory released on Wednesday, this initiative serves as a core component of the city government’s intensified energy conservation program, aiming to significantly reduce power consumption and operational costs across government facilities by transitioning eligible offices to a remote setup at the end of each week.

Under the newly issued guidelines, the city government stated that it will maintain regular on-site operations from Monday to Thursday, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM while on Fridays, a work-from-home (WFH) arrangement will be implemented specifically for offices whose functions allow for the effective performance of duties through remote means.

The city government emphasized that the delivery of public service remains the top priority.

“To ensure that Dabawenyos continue to receive necessary support without delay, departments providing frontline and essential services are mandated to maintain adequate personnel on-site. This ensures that the transition to a flexible schedule does not result in the interrupted delivery of services to the public,” it said.

To prevent any gaps in critical city operations, the advisory mentioned several key sectors that are officially exempt from the Friday WFH arrangement and these include personnel providing health and medical services, emergency response units, and disaster risk reduction and management offices. Furthermore, public safety and security services, including traffic management, will remain fully operational on-site daily, alongside other offices performing essential frontline tasks such as the immediate receiving and releasing of pertinent documents.

The city government of Davao reiterated its commitment to balancing employee welfare and environmental responsibility, ensuring that the shift toward a greener governance model upholds the high standard of service the public expects.
