An official of the Davao Light and Power Company (Davao Light) acknowledged that the transition comes with challenges in taking over power substations in Tagum, Davao del Norte.
Fermin Edillon, head of the company’s Reputation Enhancement Department of Davao Light, said major rehabilitation efforts are ongoing as Davao Light began upgrading four power substations aiming to deliver safer, more reliable, and more efficient electricity service across the Davao Region.
Edillon was referring to the substations in Apokon, Mirafuentes, Canocotan in Tagum City, and Asuncion in Davao del Norte, which Davao Light took over through Republic Act 12144 that expands the electric utility company’s franchise area.
“Ang current substations na nakuha and these require time and investment to rehabilitate this substation ug dili ni overnight ma-rehabilitate dayon. Gi-assess na ni sila sa among mga engineers ug kinahanglan i-order,” Edillon said during the Davao Peace and Security Press Corps media briefing at The Royal Mandaya Hotel.
Edillon stressed that the existing system must be aligned with Davao Light’s stricter operational and technical standards.
These upgrades, he explained, are not simple fixes but part of a comprehensive modernization program.
“Medyo layo sa operational standards ng Davao Light mao na need i-rehabilitate and significant work is needed, especially in upgrading substations and related facilities,” Edillon said.
He emphasized that the improvements are essential to meet long-term service goals.
Edillon stated that residents in these areas may experience temporary inconveniences as the company carries out the necessary upgrades.
Edillon emphasized that the rehabilitation covers not only Tagum but also nearby areas including Samal, the whole of Davao del Norte, and Davao de Oro.
Davao Light assured the public that the project is a critical step toward building a more resilient power system capable of supporting growing demand and future development in the region.
“We understand that public expectations are high, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience during this transition. However, these improvements cannot happen overnight,” Edillon added
Despite the temporary disruptions, Davao Light is urging customers to view the effort as an investment in long-term stability.
Edillon said with continued upgrades to substations and other critical facilities, Davao Light reaffirmed its commitment to delivering the level of service customers deserve.
“The company is asking for patience and understanding from the public as it works to complete the rehabilitation and bring the power system up to modern standards,” he said.
