The longstanding partnership between Japan and Davao City was underscored during a goodwill port call of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) vessel JS Ikazuchi at Sasa Port on Saturday.
Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte welcomed the officers and crew of the vessel, led by Commander Nobukazu Ryuzo.
According to Duterte, the visit marked another engagement reflecting continuing maritime and diplomatic exchanges between Davao City and Japan.
In his message, Duterte said the relationship between Japan and Davao City continues to be rooted in shared values of cooperation, mutual respect, and development, while emphasizing the importance of regional stability.
He stressed that peace remains a key foundation for sustained progress in the region.
“As neighbors in Asia, we have a common responsibility to promote stability in our region. Peace remains the foundation upon which our people can thrive, our economies can grow, and future generations can prosper. May our shared commitment to friendship and peaceful coexistence continue to deepen the bonds between Japan and Davao City for many years to come,” Duterte said.
He further noted that ties between Japan and the city have long been anchored on mutual respect and a shared vision for inclusive growth and development.
The Japanese delegation was joined by Consul General Ono Hirotaka, along with City Council International Relations Committee Chair Councilor Rachel Zozobrado and other city officials.
As part of the visit, Commander Ryuzo toured the ship with the mayor before proceeding to a meeting with city officials, highlighting ongoing cooperation and exchanges between both sides.
The JS Ikazuchi was on a three-day goodwill visit to Davao City.
