Baste says VP Sara impeachment planned for 3 years to block 2028 presidential bid

Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte claimed that the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte had been planned for three years, alleging that it was intended to prevent her from running for president in the 2028 elections.

Speaking before Duterte supporters in The Hague, the mayor alleged that the administration had long been working on the impeachment effort for political reasons.

“What I can say, really, is that they made that impeachment, the entire campaign, for three years. The administration really worked hard on it because they want to still be the ones [in power]. You know? They are preventing Vice President Inday Sara Duterte from running in the 2028 elections. That is really the main reason for that impeachment,” Duterte said.

He also questioned the impeachment proceedings, saying that elected officials are bound to uphold the Constitution.

“Let’s go back to impeachment because that’s the biggest issue now. If you will allow it, well, we don’t have a problem with that. If you think our Constitution really doesn’t mean anything, nothing. What can we do? In the first place, we are only there because we were voted as elected representatives who will uphold the Constitution itself,” he said.

Duterte added that the outcome of the impeachment case would ultimately depend on how events unfold.

“But let’s see, because that’s really a person’s destiny, what will happen to him,” he said.

The administration has maintained that the impeachment process is being conducted in accordance with constitutional procedures.
