Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez is seeking bail in connection with the P7.4-billion plunder case filed against him before the Sandiganbayan Third Division.
Romualdez’s legal team said it would file the petition on Monday, Sept. 28, following the completion of the pre-trial proceedings. The Sandiganbayan has scheduled the first bail hearing for Oct. 12.
The case stems from allegations that Romualdez and former Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co amassed P7.4 billion in alleged kickbacks from flood control and other government infrastructure projects between 2022 and 2025. Two other individuals are also charged in the case.
Romualdez, who has been detained at the New Quezon City Jail, pleaded not guilty to the charge during his arraignment earlier this month.
He was arrested at a private hospital in San Juan City after the Sandiganbayan issued a warrant of arrest. The court later ordered his transfer to the Philippine General Hospital for an independent medical examination before he was moved to the Quezon City jail.
PGH Medical Director Gerardo Legaspi previously testified that Romualdez was clinically stable and did not require continued hospital confinement.
The Sandiganbayan has set the presentation of evidence in the plunder case to begin on Nov. 23, 2026.
