Davao referees receive praises

Davao basketball referees received praises from Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas technical chairman Perry Martinez after the recent two-day SBP clinic held at the Gaisano Sky gym.
Martinez conducted the accreditation of 163 referees and was impressed by the performance of the referees after he had conducted 49 other clinics in the country.
Davao Region’s basketball regional director Regino “Boy” Cua has been instrumental in the development of basketball referees since he joined the amateur basketball body in 1998 as deputy regional director.
Manila-based international referees have been coming to Davao City, sponsored by Cua, to update the Davao officials on the FIBA rules and personally supervise the training of the participants.
The city government of Davao and some corporations, especially the Gaisano South Citimall, have been sponsoring tournaments that also led to the improvement of the referees’ competence on court.
Martinez noted the tight schedule of the Davao referees have to contend with.
Cua, the region’s amateur basketball development godfather, has instituted reforms in the Davao referee’s commission by ensuring transparency and strengthening of its ranks. He even ordered specially-made balls and donated the equipment to various schools in Davao City and to the city government as assistance in their activities.
Cua has sanctioned tournaments and other events in Davao City that did not require the collection of registration fees from players and coaches. Moses P. Billacura
