Five years ago, he was one of the original members of a golfer’s group called Dungog, which stands for Davao United Golfers Group. The word “dungog” also means honor in English.
And golf as a sport should always be an honorable game. There is no room for cheating, or else the golfer becomes the talk of the golfing community. Thus, he or she loses her honor.
That’s a concept that is always on the mind of Atty.J.V. Rommel Cubelo, a practicing lawyer from the Europa, Dacanay, Cubelo (EDC) Law Firm, one of the pioneering law firms in Davao.
The Tagum, Davao del Norte native finished his law course at the Ateneo de Davao University and as the years went by, was able to partner with other lawyers. And just like most lawyers, he ended up as a golfer.
Golf is one of the best means for a lawyer to take a break from work. In the company of other friends, stress is relieved because at the golf course, work is never discussed.
Dungog members usually go to the Apo Golf and Country Club on a weekend, play one round and start talking, too, about what projects they can do for the community.
The Chairman’s Cup, in honor William “Butch” Ramirez, was one of the tournaments Dungog members organized to raise funds for their various projects.
As they say, golfers are not just mere golfers, but as they enjoy playing the sport, they also think of something to share with the community outside of the golf club.
Come Saturday or Sunday, lawyer Cubelo and the rest of his barkada look forward to a round of golf and during a break at the club house, they start planning for another project, a worthy one, that will make them – and others — happy. [Moses P. Billacura]
