The Davao City Sports Council has set June 5 as the deadline for the submission of nominees for the 16th So Kim Cheng Sports Awards for this year.
Various national sports associations (NSAs) should submit their entries with the complete name and achievements of the outstanding athletes from June 2009 to May 2010.
According to Councilor Peter Lavina, Sports Council president, the annual awards will be held on July 22 at the Grand Regal Hotel in honor of the late sports leader, So Kim Cheng.
NSA representatives were present during the Davao City Sports Council Meeting held last Saturday which was also attended by the late sports philanthropist’s grandson, Dexter So, representative of the So Kim Cheng Foundation.
Lavina said aside from the outstanding athletes or teams, various citations would also be given to recognize the contribution of sports media, patrons and supporters.
The Council and the SKC Foundation honor outstanding performances of Davao athletes, coaches and officials as well as give citations to sports patrons from the private and government sectors every year during the birthday of the late So Kim Cheng, the first president of the Council and the only Davao City-based national president of a National Sports Association, the Table Tennis Association of the Philipppines (Tatap), a member of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
The late Mr. So was beloved as a sports leader by athletes, not only because of his generosity, but because of his genuine love for sports. He took table tennis to greater heights in the Philippines by paving the way for the hosting of international tournaments that attracted top athletes in the world.
