The sensational one-round victory scored by the Philippines Edrin “The Sting” Dapudong over Mexico’s No. 1 pound for pound flyweight Jesus “The Destroyer” Jimenez in Tepic City June 19 will be aired on Saturday, July 3, at 11 a.m. by ABC CBN Studio 23.
Manny Pinol, Dapudong’s manager, said the airing of the fight was made possible through the collaborative efforts of international matchmakers Sampson Leckowicz and Sammy Gelloani, who arranged the World Boxing Council Flyweight Silver Championship bout, ABS CBN, boxing commentator and writer Ronnie Nathanielsz and the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato.
The fight was aired on Mexican television but was not shown on Philippine television because the attention of the boxing community was on the title defense of WBC junior flyweight champion Rodel Mayol who lost to Omar Nino of Mexico on the same day in the city of Queretaro, Mexico.
The one-hour show will also feature the previous fight of Dapudong against former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental junior flyweight champion Bert Batawang which he won by 7th round technical knockout..
Dapudong, called “The Barefoot Prince of Boxing” by sports columnist Recah Trinidad for travelling to Mexico in a pair of P55 rubber slippers, will also be featured during the show.
The new world boxing champion, North Cotabato’s first, is a product of the grassroots boxing program started by then provincial governor Manny Pinol in 1998. [Carlos Bautista]
