The 3rd Mindanao Chairman’s Cup organized by the People Obsessed with Golf Inc. (POGI) Boys was a success at the Apo Golf and Country Club last July 11, but an Apo Club member emerged as the luckiest man of the tournament.
Osamu Ikeda, a retired Japanese executive and father of talented amateur golfer and International Container Terminal Services Inc.(ICTSI) mainstay Chihiro, scored an ace on hole no.17 and brought home a brand new Mitsubishi car.
An ace in a golf tournament is a rare achievement and Ikeda just got very lucky to the delight of his fellow members at the Apo Club, especially general manager Martin Misa.
The POGI Boys, headed by chairman Sammy Afdal of Philsaga Mining Corp., president Al Barretto of KarAsia Davao-Mitsubishi and tournament director Larry Pasquil of the Pasquil, Sevilla, Magulta and Garde Law Office gladly awarded the car key to Ikeda.
While daughter Chihiro is campaigning abroad for the ICTSI Team, Ikeda has all the time to play at the Apo course and hone his skills to make him qualify as member of the Apo team to the annual PAL Golf Tournament and for the regular competitions hosted by the club.
“He was very lucky, and we are happy for him,” said Misa.
The Chairman’s Cup also saw the attendance of 68 teams from only 47 last year and organizers awarded the championship trophies to T.G.I.S. composed of Bayani Garcia, Vince Gumapac, Alemar Etrone, Toffee Tionko and Leo Fusilero in the Eagle Division; Taliban A of Dennis Capa, Tony Batao, Jeff Ebreo, Joel Yamyamin and Peter Deloria in the Durian Division; BULDOG-7 of Gadi Sorella, Teody Barnuevo, Manuel Garcia Jr., Bobby Bandolon and Rolly Lobo in the Pomelo Division, and B-Meg Team of Andy Ugdoracion, OJ Calderon, Ariel Roca, Jet Tantanco and John Redelosa in the Chico Division.
But Ikeda’s hole-in-one eclipsed all their performances. [MOSES P. BILLACURA]
