Our hermanos from Zamboanga are sending a young and tough squad to the 3rd Mindanao Chairman’s Cup on July 9 to 11 at the Apo Golf and Country Club.
Brothers Isaac and Eldon Elumba and Ninon Chiong are single handicappers who are the players to watch against Davao’s young parbusters led by EJ Casintahan.
Mayor Romulo Solivio and Dr. Chito Alba of Koronadal, South Cotabato, last year’s runner-up, are gunning for the title this year in the Chico Division.
Anthony “Taras” Sasin and his squad will defend the Eagle’s Division crown along with the POGI Boys 1 of Bong Basilia, Amado Atilano, Larry Pasquil and Ludwig Ledesma.
Dubbed “Lingaw sa Davao”, the tournament is expected to be fun-filled and exciting.
Welcome to Davao City, visiting golfers!

Reports say that Sarangani Congressman Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao promises to do his best to become a better representative than he already is as a boxer.
This, to me, is an indication that after his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on November 13 in Las Vegas will be his last. If it pushes through, that is.
That would also mean the last opportunity for certain Manila sportswriters to do coverage work.
I hope Manny Pacquiao will bring along Davao Sportswriters Association president Charles Maxey to Las Vegas. Charles had been writing a lot about Manny just like any other Manila-based sportswriters, but Pacman’s team has never accorded any Mindanaoan sportswriter a chance to be part of the coverage team.
Charles is not asking for it. It is not his nature.
I hope Pacman’s advisers will give a Mindanao sportswriter a chance to write about his last fight, a fight which I feel will be the greatest boxing event of all time.

I am not saying that I don’t like Paraguay.
But I rooted for Japan when they played in the South Africa FIFA World Cup.
Our neighbour Japan lost by penalty shootout, 3-5, and failed to advance to the Round of 8.
I saw the tears of the Japanese fans who cheered strongly for their team. And seeing the last Asian team booted out of the tournament was painful to watch, too.
Japan, a beautiful country we visited in August last year with coach Boy Sarabia, Ines Mallari, coach Ariel Izabado and umpire Rubin Mendoza, courtesy of the Tokyo Kichijoji Lions Club and the Datu Uchida Development Foundation, is noted for producing world-class athletes because of its no-nonsense sports development program.
It is high time that we learned from them by tapping Dabawenyos who have established connections with Japanese sports officials.

We wish the Philippine Tchoukball Federation (PTF) officials led by chairman William “Butch” Ramirez and president Pastor Gary Visitacion and the coaches and players well when they compete in the Asia Pacific Championship on July 7 to 11 in Singapore.
Make waves, guys!
