It was a good start for Panabo’s Charly Suarez at the Manny V. Pangilinan Boxing Friendship Cup at the PICC Forum.
The product of the Brgy.Una Boxing Program and gold medalist in last year’s SEA Games in Laos outpointed MDK Wanniarchchi of Sri Lanka in the featherweight class.
Suarez is currently being prepared for the 2012 Olympic Games in London by competing in various tournaments with the help of Mr. Pangilinan and G4-S Security Systems Specialists of England.
The secret of Suarez’s rise to the top is no secret at all, actually.
Then Davao del Norte congressman Tony Boy Floirendo and Brgy. Una Boxing Program executive director Gene Rose Tecson took care of many Davao coaches and boxers led by Romeo “Dodong” Desabille, then started to develop a young team into a fine fighting machine.
The young boxers go to school, are fed, dressed and do not miss their boxing training. The result, Panabo fighters have dominated the National Junior Amateur Boxing Championships. Today, now Congressman Anton Floirendo-Lagdameo, secures funding for the athletes and Ms.Tecson supervises everything by making sure that the boxing quarters are in order always.
It’s actually a genuine program worth emulating.
Now, Suarez and other outstanding fighters like flyweight Rey Saludar, his younger brother Victor, and Mark Anthony Barriga are part of the national squad and travel abroad to get the needed exposure or compete in the MVP Cup against crack foreign fighters.
The Brgy. Una Boxing Program has been running smoothly, efficiently for years and as long as the Floirendo family is around, Panabo will keep on producing the country’s finest, talented amateur boxers.
Here’s hoping that Suarez and Company figure well in the MVP Cup as they prepare their quest for glory in the London Olympics.

Radio Mindanao Network’s dxDC came into the cycling scene in 1997. The talk was just simple at the radio station and radio network officials, now led by station manager Dodong Solis, have continued to find sponsors to run the competitions for amateur cyclists.
Then came the RMN Mindanao Race for Peace last year. It was a success due to the support of the varoius cycling clubs in Mindanao. Today, the race is entering its second year with August 22 as the date for the race.
There is now a amateur cycling program in place which had been absent for many, many years.
Salvador Paholio Jr., the Samahang Siklista Kooperatiba Dabaw chairman, has set up a short term and a long term program for cyclists and we are very thankful that RMN officials are still backing it.
