Ateneo de Davao Grade School may have dominated the tournament, but outstanding players from other schools also made their mark in the recent Davao Association of Colleges and Schools (DACS) Volleyball Tournament.
Abiel Sarabia of the University of the Immaculate Conception Grade School, daughter of former Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines Davao president, lawyer Edipolo P. Sarabia Jr. and University of Mindanao women’s basketball coach Chrysanthemum Como, broke Ateneo’s domination in the individual awards of the girl’s division by taking home the best blocker award.
Sarabia’s counterparts were Alfred Ferrer, who won the “best receiver” award and Nathaniel Hipolito, who emerged “best server”.
Assumption College of Davao GS’s Larey John Camandona was “best setter” and John Paul Fernandez was “best spiker”. St. Peter’s College of Toril GS Kempeh Patrick Shean Pangantijon bagged the “best blocker” award.
The Ateneans, who ruled both the boy’s and girl’s divisions, ran away with the rest of the individual awards led by Angelo Alba and Aliyah Paula Maspinas who clinched the “most valuable player” awards.
Michael Calebjo and Samantha Dizon were the “best scorers”, Alyssa Denise Agustin was “best server/setter” while Izumi Masu took home the “best receiver” award.
The Ateneo boys defeated Assumption in the finals, 25-17, 25-10 while their girls stopped UIC, 25-10, 25-4 at the UIC Bajada campus.
In the high school division, Ateneo de Davao boys downed Holy Cross Academy of Sasa in the boy’s finals while the Ateneo girls trounced UIC.
Wilbur Chad Policarpio and Janica Hamoy emerged MVPs while the other awardees were Holy Cross’ Miguel Cedeno and Ateneo’s Aurora Enriquez as “best scorers”, ADDU’s Dan Angelo Posadas and Sarah Cruz as “best spikers”, Assumption’s Dave Mabayag and UIC’s Vina Vera Alinas as “best blockers”, ADDU’s Prenzel Christopher Mirambel and Holy Cross’ Paula Simbajon as “best setters”, UIC’s John Paul Navales and ADDU’s Julze dela Victoria as “best servers”, Holy Cross’ Eli Silfred Ancog and UIC’s Disha Ancog as “best receivers”.
