Ateneo 5s face tough foes in Gaisano Cup

The Ateneo de Davao University men’s and women’s squads will face tough rivals in the resumption of the 2010 Gaisano South Cup on November 16 at the Gaisano Sky gym. The men’s team, fresh from a campaign in the National University Games (UniGames) in Dumaguete City, plays the Rizal Memorial Colleges Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. while the women’s squad battles Holy Cross of Davao College at 5 p.m. Head coach Pocholo Elegino said their UniGames experience helped them a lot when they won two of their recent games.
“We did very well against Emar and won by 30 points and escaped with a one-point victory against Agro,” said Elegino, whose team sport a 3-1 win-loss card. They lost only to the Jose Maria College Kings. Elegino admitted that they do not have a strong women’s squad but the players have been working very hard to improve on their plays while focusing well also on their studies. “That’s the life of a student-athlete, but they manage it well,” he said.
The women’s squad next plays the University of Southeastern Philippines on November 21 at 5p.m. while the men’s team collides with the University of Mindanao Wildcats on November 20 at 6:30 p.m. The Gaisano South Grand Citimall located on Ilustre Street has been organizing the tournament for years that benefitted elementary, high school and college students in partnership with Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Regino “Boy” Cua and tournament commissioner Rico Biliran.
