Lorelaine Gestopa and Karen Cataluna scattered 19 points, apiece to lead the UM Lady Cardinals past San Pedro College, 79-75 to keep their women’s crown in the 8th Gaisano South Cup, December 12, at the Gaisano South Citimall Sky gym.
The girls of coaches Chrysanthemum Como-Sarabia and Rosminda Dayot, the long-time tandem that gave UM a national title in the National PRISAA Championships in Cebu City, dictated the tempo and kept the SPC dribblers at bay to sweep the finals, 2-0.
Pamela Lupogan led SPC with 26 baskets.
Gestopa, Cataluna, Linda Sanco, SPC’s Lupogan and Johanna Rebagay were named mythical five members.
In the men’s division finals, coach Flordelito Cagampang of Jose Maria College outsmarted UM coach Rhoel Josol to finish the series, 2-0.
UM posted a 12-point lead in the first half but JMC slowly cut the advantage by employing a better defense in the final half.
Jumabon Bulac, who powered JMC with 22 points, was named 8th season’s most valuable player while teammates Joshua Adalid, the final’s MVP, Rey Casanillo, UM’s outstanding pointguard Arnold Adormeo and Ateneo de Davao’s center Conrad Fernando joined the mythical five selection this year.
Tournament commissioners judge Emilio Dayanghirang III, public attorney’s office head Francis Calatrava and tournament director Rico Biliran awarded the trophies and medals to the winners of the tournament supported by Head & Shoulders shampoo, Tide detergent, Purefoods Hotdog, Pepsi, Spalding and sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Regino “Boy” Cua.
