The Holy Child High School Reds, I learned from a friend, emerged No.1 in their bracket in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) National Juniors Under-17 Basketball Championship in Iloilo City.
They lost to the University of San Agustin High by a mere point, but swept all of their remaining games to barge into the finals.
Their performance is not a surprise because Holy Child has a very strong basketball program, fully backed by the Leuterio family, that had resulted to many title victories in the National BEST Championships in the past. Coaches Ildie Cunanan, Tating Sorosa and Roger Rabago have devoted a lot of their time in identifying talents, recruiting and training them to become top caliber players.
Only recently, the Reds, this year’s 8th Gaisano South (GS) Cup defending champions, even emerged champion in the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) Meet to gain the chance to represent the city in the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet on April 11 to 14 next year in Tagum City.

Amateur Association of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson said that our boxers will have to compete in two qualifying tournaments to get slots in the 2012 London Olympics.
He said all boxers will compete in the World Championships in Azerbaijan and another tournament in Kazakhstan.
Picson is confident that our boxers will have a good chance of getting through and, hopefully, we will have three or even four entries in the Olympics.
ABAP chairman Manny V. Pangilinan, for sure, will not only reward P3-million to the gold medal winner, like what he did to Guangzhou Asian Games champion Rey Saludar, who recently bought a house for his family in the pineapple country of Polomolok, South Cotabato.
Today, they are back to training and we wish Rey, his brother Victorio III, Charly Suarez, all from Mindanao, and the rest of the team members the best of everything.
