Last year, he made his fellowmen more proud when he played in the World Junior Masters in San Diego after ruling the Philippine Amateur Championships.
Clyde Mondilla was only a 16 year-old lad from simple and green Bukidnon province, a proud son of a humble caddie nicknamed Ondoy. The last time Bukidnon won a national amateur title was in 1979 courtesy of Frankie Minoza, the respected professional golfer who is currently competing in the Champions Tour in the U.S. and Clyde’s idol.
Now 17, he made another mark when he led Bukidnon to victory in the PAL Interclub Championships, with help from his friends and teammates, most of them bag carriers’ son just like him.
The 65th PAL Interclub will be held in Davao next year and Mondilla will be 18 by then and suiting up for a new team, the Canlubang Golf and Country Club.
The International Container Terminal Services Inc.-Canlubang Golf Program recruited him to raise his training to a higher level and, hopefully, become the country’s top golfer in international tournaments.
ICTSI of Ricky Razon has continued to recruit the best in the country, like Davao’s Chihiro Ikeda, a Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, and Sarah Ababa, to make them better players by following a strict training program and sponsoring their campaigns abroad to monitor their progress.
With Mondilla on board ICTSI, fellow Mindanaoans, specially those from Bukidnon, would love to see another Frankie Minoza, or better, in the future. [MPB]
