PHOENIX Petroleum Philippines Inc., the fastest growing independent oil company today, is supporting the Mayor Inday Sara Cup 2011 National Age-Group Chess Championships slated on April 25-28 at the Gaisano Mall of Davao in Davao City.
“This one of our advocacies is sports, which instills values such as teamwork, communication, and discipline, especially in the youth,” said PPPI president Dennis Uy, who hopes “that it will encourage more Filipinos to play chess and learn from it the sportsmanship, responsibility, and concentration.”
Uy will also be gracing the opeing together with Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, National Chess Federation of the Phils. (NCFP) president Prospero Pichay Jr. , lawyer Tonisito Umali, Department of Education assistant secretary for legal affairs office, Willie Tan of JEWN Eggs and Congressman Isidro Ungab.
“Phoenix responded to the call of Mayor Sara Duterte’s challenge of active private companies as partners of Davao City’s continuous boom in economy and positioning as top sports destination,” said James Infiesto, NCFP XI director and deputy OIC of the City Mayor’s Office Sports Development Division.I
The event, which will be followed by the National Juniors Chess Championships on April 29 to May 3 at the NCCC Mall is also backed up by Jewn Eggs, Tony Dacudao, Guevarra Law Office, the city government of Davao and Barangay Captains Edgar Ibuyan Jr. of 5-A and Joseph Urilla of 7-A.
At least 500 players are expected to arrive.
Grand Master Jayson Gonzales, coach of the Far Eastern University is bringing a 16-man team from Manila, while the other confirmed teams arriving are Kidapawan led by NM Reggie Olay, Sta. Ana-Laguna (Dennis Aquino), Zamboanga, Tadeco (Gerald Caban), General Santos (Elias Banguiran), Surallah-Cotabato (Ferdinand Leysa), Bulacan (Winnie Felix), Antipolo (Francis Lopez), Digos (Jimmy Dano) and Iloilo (Ronel Ballesteros).
The categories for the boys and girls are the 20 years old and below, 16 and below, 14 and below, 12 and below, 10 and below and 8 and below. Cash prizes and medals are up for grabs.
This is a qualifying event for the Asean Age Group tournament in Tarakan, Indonesia on June 11-20, while the Juniors will be the qualifying event for the World Juniors in Delhi, India on August 1-16.
The Juniors is open for 20 years old and below both in the boys and girls division.
