Veteran-powered DDS Tigs and the youth-laden Team Pitbull emerged as champions in the recent 2011 Kicksand Beach Football Tournament Mindanao Leg at the Bluejaz Resort and Waterpark in Samal Island.
DDS topped the women’s open division after a thrilling shootout victory over Team Galaxy in the finals.
Eventual MVP winner Reynalyn Ravanes capped her brilliant goalkeeping chores in the shootout with one crucial save to hand DDS Tigs the trophy. Solido FC Team A salvaged third place by besting its Team B counterparts in the battle for third.
In the men’s division, Jeric Iligan scored on a short stab off a pass from Jason Mortillero in the final minute as Team Pitbull completed a Houdini act over a tough S and G Ventures unit, 4 goals to 3. Iligan was awarded the MVP trophy for his heroics. RMC Bulldogs finished third after beating Solido FC.
A record field of 28 teams took part in this event organized by the Beach Football Association. BFAP President Mike Athab personally awarded the trophies to the winners of the final leg of a trilogy that started in Subic for the Luzon leg and Boracay for the Visayas leg. Mama Sitas FC and Libertas FC won the titles in the Luzon leg in Subic while Loco Frio Boracay won the Visayas leg recently over Zigzag FC.
The Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Football Federation are supporting the tournament which hopes to discover fresh talents for future beach football national teams.
