IT’S all systems go for the 2012 Mayor Sara and Vice Mayor Rody Duterte – 10th AFP-PNP Basketball Tournament that will kick off at 1 p.m. on November 6 at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.
A total of 12 teams led by back-to-back defending champion Vice Mayors Office and last year’s runner-up Police Regional Office – XI will vie for top glory and honors in the two month-long tournament organized to promote camaraderie among the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP).
Other teams entered are Philippine Air Force, Bureau of Fire Protection, Regional Public Safety Battalion, Philippine Coast Guard, Task Force Davao, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Philippine Navy, National Support Unit – 4th Special Action Battalion and Eastern Mindanao Command – 10th Infantry Agila Division.
Ma. Trisha Goldie Delvo, the tournament overall in-charge and tournament director, said the teams will play single round eliminations and the top four teams will advance to the semi-finals en route to the championship match.
“Apart from the semi-final round, there is also a consolation round to determine the 5th to 8th placers because there’s a corresponding prizes allotted to that,” she said.
Games will be played on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays until December. Cash prizes and trophies are up for grabs in the tournament sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) regional office.
Last year’s third placer Regional Public Safety Battalion – XI and Bureau of Fire Protection, the 2010 finalist, leads the pack of formidable contenders this year along with the DCPO and the EastMinCom-10th ID.
VMO won the title last year via finals two game sweep behind its top gun Christopher “Bong” Go, the executive assistant of Vice Mayor Rody Duterte.
