aTeam Philippines walloped Sweden, 12-2, to nail its first victory in the 2012 Homeless World Cup Monday (Tuesday morning Manila time) at the Plaza de la Constitución in Zócalo, Mexico City Farmer Nichol John Jardin from Tayabas, Quezon, John Paul Cordero from the Leyte-Samar Center for Change and Eddie Alivio from Don Bosco Boys’ Home and Training Center in Cebu hit three goals each to lead the Filipinos to their first triumph of the competition.
The victory also snapped the country’s three game skid in the competition after losing to Romania, 8-4, in their first match of the day. They yielded two straight matches last Sunday (Monday morning Manila time) – a 10-1 defeat against Austria and an 11-2 loss against Portugal.
The Philippines is now in the fourth spot out of the five countries in Group G led by leaders Portugal, Austria and Romania. Sweden, which has not won any matches, is in last place.
The Filipinos are now set to compete in the secondary stage of the tournament, the fixtures for which are yet to be announced.
The Homeless World Cup employs the rules of a more fast-paced type of football game called street soccer, which is played on a much smaller court and only involves four players – one goalkeeper and three outfield players – for each team.
Since first joining the competition in 2008, the Philippines has performed well, ranking 26th out of 69 nations last year.
